Hidden Brain podcast receives more than three million downloads per week by exploring the unconscious patterns that drive human behavior and the questions that lie at the heart of our complex and changing world.
Mr. Vedantam and Hidden Brain have been recognized with the Edward R. Murrow Award, and have received honors from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and the Society of Professional Journalists, amongst others. Mr. Vedantam’s presentation will reveal to us how our hidden brains show us selective slices of reality, providing us with cautionary tales that will sharpen our sense of self awareness.
Eric Cole, Ph.D. is an industry- recognized security expert. He founded Secure Anchor Consulting, a leading provider of cybersecurity solutions and services. Dr. Cole served on President Obama's cybersecurity task force. He served as the Chief Technology Officer
of McAfee and Chief Scientist
for Lockheed Martin. Dr. Cole is the author of several books and has been interviewed by several chief media outlets such as CNN, CBS and 60 Minutes. Dr. Cole
will address recent trends in cybersecurity, including the reason law firms have become prime targets for ransomware, and will provide advice on protecting our clients and firms.
The Honorable Jeremy Fogel is the Executive Director of the Berkeley Judicial Institute, a center at UC Berkeley School of Law with a mission to build bridges between
judges and academics and to promote an ethical, resilient and independent judiciary. Prior to his appointment at UC Berkeley, he served as Director of the Federal Judicial Center in Washington DC from 2011 to 2018 and as a U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of California from 1998- 2011. He was the founding directing attorney of the Mental Health Advocacy Project from 1978-1981.
Judge Fogel will be speaking on “Three Existential Challenges to the American Legal System,” with the challenges being: 1) the disruption caused by COVID and the future
of the Courts in the wake of that disruption; 2) the persistence of structural inequality in access to justice and the system itself; and 3) the hypo-polarization of political and social discourse. Judge Fogel believes the organized bar has a critical role to play in providing leadership and setting a positive example.
Other plenary sessions will address the need for and importance
of diverse talent development,
the issues that continue to keep corporate counsel up at night
and sleepless in Seattle, and the promotion of civility in our profession.
Our Substantive Law Section presentations will be divided into two simultaneous sessions. In the “Anatomy of a Trial” series, we will be delving into the challenges of trial processes, showcasing our very own top national trial attorneys. The series will address trial preparation, jury selection, opening statements and closing arguments, direct and cross examinations, and experts.
