 Looking Forward
  interesting collections. Across
from SAM are the Harbor Steps,
a nice spot to stop and check out the view of Elliott Bay or divert to the waterfront. Pioneer Square
has many unique shops. Magic Mouse Toys is great fun and Flora and Henri is a lovely boutique. If you make it all the way to Pioneer Square, look for the Merchant’s Cafe only because my German immigrant ancestors lived in the small apartments above the cafe when they first came to Seattle
in the pre-gold rush days of the 1880’s. Later, my great grandfather founded a cigar factory in Pioneer Square that burned in Seattle’s great fire. He rebuilt and lived to be 100, telling many wild stories of the early days. This is a city walk so expect some local “character” along the way. The kids might be bored with this city walk.
Pike Place Market
I hardly have to tell you about this very popular Seattle scene. This is my most important local tip - it is The Market or Pike Place Market but never Pike’s Market, please! Go here, wander around, eat, watch people, eat more, buy flowers and art, eat and drink. Everyone loves the market, locals and tourists alike. If you have an interest in Northwest Coast Native Art, go to the Steinbruek Native Gallery at the north end of the Market for excellent pieces by artists from here to Alaska. Great for everybody.
The Seattle Center
This 74-acre park was first established for the 1962 World’s Fair. The Seattle Opera, PNW Ballet, Seattle Rep Theater, Children’s Theater, Pacific Science Center with an IMAX theater, The Climate Pledge Arena, MOPOP and more
are all located here scattered among 40 acres of open space, plazas, lawns and fountains. At its center
is the Space Needle and at the
base of that is Chihuly Museum of Glass where we will all meet for the Presidents Reception. A very family friendly destination and only about a mile from the hotel. Remember the Monorail.
Amazonia
One last insider tip to make your stay more comfortable; the area some are calling Amazonia. For several blocks on either side of Westlake Avenue from South
Lake Union nearly to Nordstrom are recently built offices, condos and restaurants largely occupied
by Amazon and various biotech firms. The area is dotted with small, interesting eateries and great places for takeout. The Amazon Spheres are in this area - very interesting urban architecture. Lastly, there
are three good places to go if you need to stock your fridge: Whole Foods on Westlake and Denny, PCC Market, an excellent local grocery, in the Rainier Tower between 4th and 5th at University, and of course, Pike Place Market!
The blues and greens await you. Come see Seattle in the summer. It is what we locals wait for all the long grey winter so I am super glad we don’t have to leave for our Annual Meeting just as summer peaks in the Northwest. Seattle is the place to be!
