Deposition Drills How to Teach Deposition Skills
  Securing Sound Bites
We live in a society of sound bites. Sound bites matter. They resonate. They can win (or lose) a case. Getting a witness to reiterate your sound bites is a way to get them to bolster your case, support your theme and help you win. This exercise addresses how to secure sounds bites from witnesses.
EXPLANATION
Participants learn to secure sound bites.
EXERCISE
Identify a witness you cross-examined in deposition and describe the case and the role of the witness in the case to the participants. Discuss common sound bites often used in the news, in movies, media, songs and television. Have the participants question you (as you role play the witness) in such a manner as to attempt to secure favorable sound bites.
LESSONS LEARNED
Media, movies, television and music all talk in sound bites. The hook. The catch phrase. The cliché. Reducing your case to sound bites and getting witnesses to regurgitate them is a powerful way to have the jury see your case on your terms.
A FEW QUESTIONS TO DISCUSS
Why is it important to secure sound bites? How do you secure sound bites?
What do you achieve by using sounds bites?
