PREFACE
“… Something spoken as introductory to a discourse …
whatever is necessary to the understanding…” Webster’s
Dictionary, April 14, 1828
Why a preface?
Authors often write a preface to
promote their publication. It is the
cornerstone for the pages that follow.
My purpose however, is to give you a
brief personal introduction. I will let
the content of this booklet speak for
itself. It focuses on practical issues for your retirement planning.
When you cross over the crest of the mountain (and enter
retirement) the other side holds an adventure that enables you
to either merely survive or to thrive. It all depends on the paths
you choose to manage the rest of your journey.
In The beginning…
Like many of you, I am retired. At least I thought I was until our
friends Jim and Kristi Hamilton introduced us (my wife Mary and
me) to the insurance business only seven short years ago. I had
no intention of going back to work. I already retired from a
successful career in engineering, manufacturing, and consulting.
The idea of earning a few extra dollars to supplement our
retirement income sounded good to me. We began by helping
federal employees build a secure nest egg for their retirement.
Mary and I traveled seven western states helping workers
understand how to maximize their retirement income.
