First Day of Surveillance Considerations

u Given a yard that is immaculate and one that is trashed, surveillance position might be
better in front of the trashed yard
u Ideal to set up on a property line shared by two residences
u Children’s toys in yard could indicate children out playing near where you want to set up
u Take note of security cameras, who is watching you?
u Anticipate how the neighborhood might change if you are there all day, Sun’s location,
people out taking notice of “strange vehicle”
u VISUALIZE DIRECTION OF TRAVEL WHEN SUBJECT LEAVES
u Ideally start in one spot and be able to finish investigation using the same surveillance
position
u Check in with law enforcement?

u Goal is for your surveillance vehicle to be observed by the subject as few
times as possible, while keeping sight of the subject

u Initial departure is critical as you don’t know the subject’s driving habits,
fast, slow, extremely observant

u This can be when many investigators lose contact with the subject or get
burned
