As a three-season athlete, starting off your fall season as the captain of an undefeated Cham- pionship team sets the stage for an exceptional senior year for Paulina Huckins. Paulina came to Newfound her freshman year as a transfer and quickly settled into the volleyball program.
Coming in as a front row player, she already had a very ag- gressive feel at the net; however, she had high hopes to evolve her game to be utilized in the back row. She worked hard during her freshman and sophomore years to improve her back row game to become an all-around player. Then by her Junior year, Paulina’s strong front row offense and crucial supporting defense helped clinch Newfound’s first ever volleyball championship.
Paulina came into this season, as most senior athletes do, with the understanding of the final-
ity of the moment. There was a focus and purpose to her finish- ing her volleyball career with the hope of defending Newfound’s championship. She committed to summer ball and took on a leadership role with the newer players. It was no surprise that her peers voted her as a captain
for the season.
With a busy athletic schedule last year and summer ball, Pau- lina came in as a different hitter with power and height added to her game. She led the team in four of the six categories that are tracked. She led in serve to receive with 119 strong passes, 184 kills, 21 blocks, and 142 digs. Digs from this year added to her previous years allowed Paulina to join a handful of
Newfound players that have reached a volleyball milestone of 500 digs. She had been qui- etly creeping toward that re- cord unbeknownst to her, and
in game three of the Champi- onship match, a timeout was called to congratulate her on the accomplishment. After a mini celebration and a few tears, the team collected themselves back together and began notching away at a 19-6 deficit to overtake Mascenic and take the win. So Paulina finished her Newfound volleyball career with two Cham- pionships and a personal record, and how should we acknowledge that? As led by Paulina in the team huddle....Newfound on 3! 1,2,3 NEWFOUND!!!!
