Gather at the River for a Summer Solstice Celebration!
PLYMOUTH - It’s been a long time since most people have been able to safely gather with friends and enjoy live music. Sing- ers in choral groups have been es- pecially frustrated, unable to sing together for more than a year. But that is all about to change with the warm weather.
After several months of virtual rehearsals on Zoom, The Pemige- wasset Choral Society (Pemi Cho- rus) has been rehearsing outside, with masks, at the Rotary Amphi- theater in Plymouth, N.H. The amphitheater is an outside perfor- mance area built into the ground alongside the Pemi River, and is the site of their upcoming con- cert with the NH Master Chorale during the weekend of the Sum- mer Solstice, June 19th and 20th.
“There was so much frustra- tion and lack of satisfaction with the Zoom rehearsals,” says Pemi Choral Conductor Will Gunn. “When we could come back to- gether and sing in a group, it was really special.” The chorus began
their outside rehearsals on April 5th when it was still fairly cold. Gunn joked, “We resembled a mid-winter choir, even though it was April, because everyone was bundled up in wool hats and heavy coats.”
The Pemi Chorus is a re- gional community chorus based in Plymouth, NH, with a wide ranging musical repertoire rang- ing from classical to folk songs, to contemporary. Members come from communities throughout the Lakes Region and the White Mountains. As a true commu- nity chorus, there are no audition requirements. The only mem- bership requirement is a love of singing, the ability to sing on key, and a commitment to attend weekly rehearsals. For the Sum- mer Solstice Concert in June, they will be joined by the NH Master Chorale, directed by for- mer Plymouth State University professor of music and choral activities, Dr. Dan Perkins. The Master Chorale is an auditioned
chamber ensemble whose mem- bers are trained singers and music professionals from throughout New England.
“Dan and I have been working together for ten years but this is our first collaborative concert!” said Gunn, who is on the music faculty at Plymouth State Uni- versity, as well as the director of Music at Plymouth Regional High School. The two conductors chose the theme of the concert, “Gather at the River,” to focus on the concert location and scen- ery. “The Rotary Amphitheater at Riverside Park is one of the most underrated spots in Plym- outh. It’s a gorgeous open space right by the river - set back from Main Street so you don’t hear the busy traffic from downtown,” said Gunn. The stadium style seating at the Amphitheater provides a perfect view of the wildlife along the river, as the chorus was visited by bald eagles during two of its Monday night rehearsals.
Each chorus will perform a half-dozen songs and will com- bine their voices for a favorite

work, “The Ground,” by Ola Gjelo. The Master Chorale will be premiering a piece of music called “Windshear,” sung in the Abenaki language. This area of New Hampshire, especially the Pemigewasset River, was origi- nally Abenaki land, and “Wind- shear” pays homage to them.
