STAGE FOUR: HOUSEHOLD
1. Household Dining, cont’d
d-At Sherbrooke Community Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, 11 houses form the Kinsmen and Veteran’s Villages where residents and staff (daily living assistants) whip up a batch of gingersnaps, while others fold clothes with their family. Each house has a kitchen, dining room, living room, laundry room, a gas fireplace, a patio with
a barbecue and a back yard––all designed for the physically and cognitively impaired. Ten elders live in each house, each connected by an internal street to the original, more traditionally designed nursing home where elders live in eight neighborhoods of 20 residents each.
Bigfork Valley Communities introduced the household model to the Midwest in 1999. Originally Northern Pines Communities, their goal was to have the resident at the center of everyone’s thoughts, plans and daily events. Life in a Bigfork Community is natural, just like life at home, with quiet times and busy times, delicious cookies and the ones that didn’t turn out quite as good. Some days there are lots of visitors and some days the choice is TV, taking a nap on the couch, a crossword puzzle or just visiting with each other. Their journey to home was more successful than they ever dreamed.
