Lenawee Medical Care Center, described in the neighborhood section of this workbook, is truly a household, simply awaiting the arrival of a dishwasher.
Staff credit the model with positive outcomes–the smaller setting cuts down on distractions for the residents, and the cooking aromas stimulate the residents’ appetites. They tell of a resident with dementia who used to wander around during meals, taking food from other resident’s plates, who now is more focused and eats sitting down without redirection.
Neilson Place, North Country Health Care Services in Bemidji, MN opened their
four new households in autumn 2004. Each of their four households features a
full kitchen at the hub of each living and dining area. Breakfasts are cooked to order. Kitchens are open and inviting for resident, staff and family access 24/7. Dishwashers add the sounds and smells of dish washing to the home. All CNAs are cross-trained in dining tasks. Their goal is to cook three meals a day in each household, soon!
Perham Memorial Hospital and Home in Perham, MN opened the first of their new households to residents in Spring 2005. Each house of 16 will have its’ own country kitchen opening to the dining room. There is a staff-only swing
kitchen shared between two households. But each household kitchen is
designed to easily be converted to an all commercial-grade kitchen should they decide at some time to cook all meals in the household.
