bEComing inCrEasingly sElf-aWarE: ThE spiral of lEarning
We might be willing to change the way we lead. But how do we go about it? It helps to begin by understanding how we learn as human beings. Picture a continuous spiral. We see and hear, we think and struggle to understand, we feel, we develop intentions, we act. The actions have consequences that we see and hear, so we think and struggle to understand, we feel, we develop intentions, we act . . . and so on.
The Spiral of Learning is an evolution we move through not only in our daily lives, but on a grander scale in our culture. We start with raw data (info that we see, hear, smell, touch or taste); that we process, have feelings about, form intentions and act. For the most part, this process comes naturally. We do it thousands of times a day and don’t even think about it. Sometimes we skip the thinking part or blow through it quickly and let old thoughts provoke our emotions that then dictate our actions. We also run into problems when we don’t take time to get all the information, our thinking is flawed, we don’t recognize emotions that come from old data, we don’t bother forming our intentions (planning) or we decide but don’t take action.
By taking time to purposefully move through the Spiral of Learning, we improve our chances for a positive, productive outcome. Your new thinking will rejuvenate the learning process, enabling you to grow in new ways that enhance your leadership and contribute to the growth of others as well.
