Discover Stories All Around You
1) Go out and talk to people. Tell people you are gathering great stories to share. Ask them if they have had an experience that demonstrates culture change. If your organization is very early in its culture change journey you may have to explain what it is. Or ask for stories of hope, of friendships in the facility, of resident-directed care (where a resident was able to be the boss of a situation), of living life with meaning and purpose.
2) Read written stories. Search through magazines and books on culture change. Scour webpages for great stories (visit www. culturechangenow.com, www.edenalt.com, www.pioneerexchange.org). Print out those that you would like to share with
others. You can share a good story by handing out the story to everyone and asking for a volunteer to read it, or by reading it to the group and asking for their reactions to the story.
3) Show video. Videos are also great ways to convey story. A 3- or 5-minute clip from a larger video can be a dramatic lead into a meaningful discussion. Find culture change on videos at www.culturechangenow.com; and on pioneernetwork.net. Or grab a video camera and capture your own stories. Remember to follow the rules of your organization, seek appropriate permission, and be sure that residents are respected.
