P. 4
The first step in transformation is to recognize that a change needs to be made, or even that the winds of change are blowing even if you feel that you are sheltered from the breeze.
Ask participants to form groups of three to discuss the following topics. Each group should take one and record their observations about each topic as it relates to long-term care.
• The aging population (known demographics as well as assumptions)
• Our culture (that impacts aging issues)
• Our economy
• Our desires for our own aging experience
• Our need for transformational leadership
After five or ten minutes bring the whole group back together and ask each group to share their findings. Open for additional discussion if there is time. What conclusions can we draw from these thoughts?
(This is an example of the kind of summary a group might develop: “There are many problems facing us because of the increase in the numbers of aged adults as a result of the size of the baby boomer generation. They will not be satisfied with the institutional care we are providing today, nor will we. We must discover the answers and begin to work now to create a new world of long term care.”)
End the discussion on a high note. “This is our opportunity to create something dramatically different than the institutional nursing home. We truly have a chance to create what we want for our parents – and for ourselves when we’re elders and in need of services.”
