Quality of Care Still Expected
Naturally, a high quality of care is still expected and nurses are still in charge of it. However, the charge nurse’s familiar “charge”
– namely the medication cart and the nurses’ station – is gone. Stepping out from behind the barriers of the cart and station often allows caregivers to be more up close and personal with residents’ needs, resulting in a new and overarching expectancy of quality.
“We’ve brought quality of care back to the bedside,” says Marilyn Oelfke. At Perham Memorial, six residents used to be fed by staff. After the conversion to households, only two now are fed and the other four eat independently.
