The Institutional Pull
Even after working in the Household Model for three years at Perham Memorial, three nursing assistants could not adapt to the new culture. Two resigned and one was asked to leave. To them, good care required a schedule. Without it, it felt like less care.
No matter what the household coordinator did to grow as a manager and build a rapport with them, these three “old school” staff members continued to see her in her previous role as an activity assistant. In the Household Model the old structured world of black and white rules turns grey, and some can’t handle grey.
Beware of institutional pull for it is extremely strong, partly because it is easier to go back to the way we’re used to even though we
now know better. And don’t forget the ninth Essential Element of the Household Model: “Institutional creep in design and culture is treated as a wolf at the door.”
Community Learning Circle Question
In what areas is the “institutional pull” holding us back?
