Individualized Care Outperforms Generic Standards
Turning someone every two hours during the night is generic, one-size-fits-all care. Person- centered nighttime care makes for better
sleep. For example, instead of generic practice, assess individual needs for repositioning
and observing if the resident already turned himself, and if not, gently and barely move him instead of flipping him.
Individualized care results in better outcomes and in the long run, time and frustration are saved by not struggling to make something work that doesn’t.
Staff Learning Circle Questions
Give an example of a generic practice and how we have individualized it for one of our residents.
What are generic standards of care we continue to adhere to that might better suit the people we serve if we begin to look at them individually instead?
