Common Sense Assessing and Care Planning (cont’d)
The Joiner
The Joiner typically has always liked
being in a family household. He grieved hard when his wife died and feels badly when the children don’t come to visit. He misses the good times when his children and grandchildren gathered in his home
on the weekends. He longs for the Sunday night card games. Now that he’s living here, his room in the household functions as a bedroom. The household is central
to his life and he spends more time in the kitchen, living and dining rooms than in his bedroom. He engages others, takes part
in household life and loves helping make decisions. He relishes being asked, “What do you think about...?” and “Should we...?” For him, the household is his home and the rest of the nursing home community is his neighborhood.
The Social Person
Is there a third type – the Social Person or Social Butterfly?
Two particular residents at Perham Memorial seem to fit this description. Of course they belong to a household, but they are more often seen at the Town Center and in other households where they join in activities or visit friends every afternoon.
Before coming to the nursing home, the Social Butterfly may have sat on or chaired committees, raised money for causes, or served as a city council member or even
as mayor. She might use the household primarily for eating (although she probably eats out a lot), sleeping and taking showers.
These examples show how the Household Model supports a rich daily home life for everyone, no matter their personality type or needs.
