Spontaneous Activities
Spontaneity - it comes easily for some and not for others. Some staff members naturally take to leading activities, and do it faithfully; some do not. It depends on the person’s inclinations, comfort level and workload. Help with ideas, a ready stash of supplies and perhaps even a prompt to get started may encourage staff to take on spontaneous activities more often.
Residents of a household at Episcopal Church Home decided they wanted to play BINGO, but just in their own house without putting it on
a calendar and having lots of visitors. Because it was spontaneous (planned within 24 hours of their decision) there wasn’t much chance
for the information about the game to spread to neighbors, so they played by themselves or with folks they specifically invited immediately before the games began. There is nothing that says BINGO needs to be played with dozens of people. Even the “nursing home staple” can get new life when the residents get involved.
