Normal Human Behavior – “That’s
my seat”
Always sitting in the same seat is very typical human behavior. Remember sitting in the same seats in your college classes? Did your family sit in the same pew or seats where they worshipped, or the same chairs at the dining table? If householders sit in the same seats meal after meal, it is simply normal behavior.
However, when a person is so bold as to sit somewhere else, it can shake things up – hopefully in a good way. That person may
get to know and find something in common with other householders. Of course, sitting where someone else normally sits can create challenge, but challenge is good. Perhaps we should remind householders they may sit where they want, and that it may be okay, or it may upset others.
Also remember that how the household decides to do it now may not be the same
as what they decide later. The household’s personality changes as people move in and out. Over time it is worthwhile to bring the subject up again. The key is to adhere to Bump’s Law. Learn the answers to the following questions by asking residents and their family members, and through your own observations.
Bump’s Law
What does the resident want?
How did the resident do it at his/her previous home?
How do you do it at home?
How should we do it here?
Community Learning Circle Questions
Where do you like to sit?
Do you have a favorite chair?
