CELL PHONE AND PDA POLICY
Although The Piper recognizes the widespread use of cellular phones and personal digital assistants, the use of personal cellular phones and electronic devices while at work may pose significant safety issues and serve as a distraction to the user, his/her co-workers and residents. This purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines for the use of personal and Company-provided cellular phones and personal electronic devices during working hours in order to ensure a safe and productive working environment. The policy also sets forth rules concerning cellular phone use while driving Company vehicles or personal vehicles while conducting Company business.
Scope
This policy applies to all associates, locations, divisions and operating units of the Company.
Definitions
For purposes of this policy, the following definitions apply:
“Cell Phone” (also known as a mobile phone, smart phone, handheld cell or handset): a mobile/portable electronic device that engages in telecommunications including voice calls, text messaging/short message service (SMS) and/or e-mail. Cell phones also may include features like Internet access, games, multimedia messaging service (MMS), instant messaging (IM) service, digital audio (MP3) players, cameras, radios and global positioning systems (GPS). Cell Phone also includes hands-free devices, such as a headset or Bluetooth ear piece.
“Personal Digital Assistant (“PDA”)” means any portable apparatus that involves user interaction, including, but not limited to, laptops, DVD players, GPS systems, iPods, MP3 players, cameras, pagers, or beepers.
Personal Cell Phones &PDAs
While at work, associates are expected to exercise the same discretion in utilizing personal Cell Phones or PDAs as is utilized with respect to Company phones or equipment. First, personal Cell Phones and PDAs should be turned off during working time and must be stored in the associate’s bag, purse, backpack or locker. Associates may not maintain personal Cell Phones or PDAs on their person during working hours. Further, making and receiving personal calls during the workday, regardless of the phone used, can interfere with the associate’s productivity and be distracting to others. Associates should limit personal calls during the workday to a minimum, regardless of the phone used. Flexibility will be provided in extenuating circumstances demanding immediate attention and, if an associate needs to make an emergency call during working hours, he/she should ask permission to use the location’s telephone.
Associates should notify family members, friends, schools and child care providers of this policy and instruct them to call the location if an emergency arises and they need to reach the associate.
Associates may make and receive personal calls on personal Cell Phones or PDAs during non-work times (meal breaks and 15 minute rest breaks) and in an area identified as appropriate by the Community Leader or designee. At any time while an associate is on the premises and has his/her personal Cell Phone or PDA set to receive calls it must be set to vibrate or silent mode.
The Company will not be liable for any loss or damage to personal Cell Phones or PDAs brought to the workplace.
Associates are prohibited from using personal Cell Phones or PDAs for any unacceptable purpose or in any manner that could be reasonably construed as offensive, inappropriate or harassing.
