Nurses often conduct studies with hospitalized or institutionalized
people, and such people may feel pressured into participating or
may believe that their treatment would be jeopardized by failure to
cooperate.
6. Pregnant Women
The pregnant women cannot be involved in a study unless risks to
them and the fetus are minimal or unless the purpose of the research
is to meet the women’s health needs.
f. Institutional Review Boards and External Reviews
It is sometimes difficult for researchers to be objective in doing risk-
benefit assessments or in developing procedures to protect participants' rights.
Biases may arise as a result of researcher commitment to an area of knowledge
and their desire to conduct a valid study. Because of the risk of a biased
evaluation, the ethical dimensions of a study are usually subjected to external
review.
