Sardines and Mackerel
Brisling sardines or sprats (sprattus sprattus)
are officially a species of sardine but in size
terms are mid-way between sardines and
anchovy. They are high in omega 3, fished by
small boats on the West Coast of Scotland,
very delicate and fine in taste. The mackerel
is fished by large boats that operate pair
trawls to the North of Scotland, all the way
up to the Faroes, and packed for us in
Fraseburg at the North-East tip of Scotland.
Nets are set on vast schools of mackerel
during their annual migration. Fish stocks
are well managed and there is no by-catch.
Canned fish is one of nature’s nutritional
superfoods – that’s why we say eat fish 3
times a week. The majority of canned fish
are oily fish which are the only reliable
source of Omega 3’s . The best sources of all
are sardines and mackerel. A ‘high in Omega
3’ symbol on the can means that the levels
have been verified by analysis.
