Hear from our Famous Citizens
A well-known citizen of South Carolina in 1755 is William Bull. He was a captain of the
Tuscarora war, famous land owner, politician, and acting governor. Here are some
endorsements he might have said about the colony: ¨What spectacular land! How fertile and
beautiful!¨ or he could have said: ¨How magnificent! Our port cities! Indescribable beauty.”
John Rutledge was also a very well known citizen. In 1776, South Carolina formed their own
independent government, with him being appointed president. Some endorsements he might
have made would be “South Carolina, I never imagined I’d get to stand here and look out on the
sea, and yet, here I am, in this majestic land, now free.”
Other important citizens of South Carolina are Christopher Gadsden, Arthur Middleton, and
Henry Laurens, all of which were very influential leaders of the colony. They might have said, “I
am so proud to be standing here today, leading our citizens to all of their glory, to better
heights.”
