Our Largest Cities
South Carolina’s most well known city is Charleston. Charleston was
founded in 1670 and was called Charles Town originally, in honor of King Charles
II. It is located on the coast and is a major port city. It was even known as “Little
London” as it was filled with luxuries imported from Europe. Other coastal cities
in South Carolina include Mount Pleasant and Beaufort. Camden, SC is the oldest
inland city, established in 1732 and serving as the trade center for inland Carolina
in the 1700s.
The bustling port of Charles Town in Colonial times is shown here.
