Children and Face Masks
Some Common Misconceptions
Can wearing a mask make it harder for children to breath?
Cloth masks are made from breathable material that will not block the oxygen needed.
Most children, including those with medical conditions, can safely wear a cloth face mask
for extended periods of time, such as the school day or at child care.
Can masks interfere with a child's lung development?
No. Oxygen flows through and around the mask, but the mask blocks droplets that may
contain the virus.
Do masks trap the carbon dioxide we normally breathe out?
No. Carbon dioxide molecules are very tiny.
These molecules cannot be trapped by breathable materials like cloth masks.
Can masks lead to a weaker immune system by putting the body under stress?
No. Wearing a cloth face covering does not weaken your immune system or increase your
chances of getting sick if exposed to the COVID-19 virus.
How do masks prevent the spread of COVID-19?
Cloth masks create a barrier that reduces the spray of a person's spit and respiratory
droplets, which play a key role in the spread of COVID-19.
