to carry out this anti-Islamic policy.
As soon as Milosevic came to power, he ended the autonomy that
had been granted to Kosovo in Tito's time. He began holding fascist-
style meetings to fan the flames of Serbian nationalism. Places of higher
education in Kosovo were barred from teaching in Albanian, newspa-
pers publishing in that language were closed down, and the people
were oppressed. It was intended that the Albanians should leave the re-
gion, and in fact some 400,000 did so during that time. At the same time,
