Whip Scorpion
Period: Cretaceous
Age: 125 million years
Region: Santana Formation, Araripe Basin, Brazil
Whip scorpions are not poisonous but when they feel
threatened they can squirt a mixture of acetic acid and
octanoic acid from glands in the back of their ab-
domens further than 80 cm (over 2.5 feet). This sub-
stance serves as a weapon to deter enemies. Whip scor-
pions that possess the same features 125 million years
ago as those living today are one of the proofs that re-
fute evolution.
