Muslims lived as a minority in the pagan society of
Mecca and were exposed to much oppression. Many
Muslims were physically tortured, some were martyred,
most had their homes and possessions pillaged and
they were subjected to constant insults and threats.
Yet Muslims continued to live without resorting to
violence, merely keeping their distance from the
idolaters and calling on them to live in peace.
