time is the only thing that chance needs
to bring about extraordinary events. This
warped logic claims that, if given time,

chance can transform a mass of inert, un-
conscious atoms into—for example—a
fig, olive, strawberry, orange, peach,
tomato, pomegranate, melon, banana, vi-
olet, tulip, orchid, or rose; into ants,

butterflies, peacocks, horses, gi-
raffes, and human beings,
or any of a million
other things you
may not
think of.
