dark state of the soul of people who do not believe in Allah. Because
there is no limit to the depravity of an unbeliever. Since such people
imagine they will never have to account for their deeds in this world they
regard it as perfectly legitimate to oppress and murder, and inflict vio-
lence and savagery on themselves and those around them. As we have
seen in the preceding chapters of this book, such people have no con-
ception of sin and crime. They therefore regard every superstition com-
manded by their perverted traditions as true, and blindly follow them to
the letter. However, people caught up in such a superstitious way of life
need to know that human beings are not totally free. They are responsi-
ble for all their actions, and they will have to account for their every
word and deed in the Presence of Allah. As our Lord asks in Surat al-
Qiyama: “Does man reckon he will be left to go on unchecked?”
