Present-day nautili have exactly the same
characteristics as those that lived millions
of years ago. The fossil record shows that
they have not changed down the ages—in
other words, they never underwent
evolution. One of the specimens showing
this fact is the 167-million-year-old fossil
nautilus pictured.
