76                   L LOVE IN THE TORAH


             to the nations. He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets.
             A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff
             out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; he will not falter or be dis-
             couraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his law the islands will
             put their hope. (Isaiah, 42:1-5)


             Go up and down the streets... look around and consider... If you can
             find but one person who deals honestly and seeks the truth, I will for-
             give this city. (Jeremiah, 5:1)

             So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life
             or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies
             but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have
             asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will nev-
             er have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be”... They held the king
             in awe, because they saw that he [Solomon] had wisdom from God to
             administer justice. (1 Kings, 3:11-12, 28)
