Desert plants possess leaves designed to
           store water and nutrients. These may be
         cylindrical in shape, as in Sedum. (top and
          left and below), or prismatic, as in the ice
       plant (Carpobrotus edulis,  below right). The
        Cereus shown below stores water in its un-
                              derground bulb.
