H itler's concentration
camps and Stalin's gu-
lags were replaced in
China by the laogai.
Most of the people in
them were supporters
of democracy and
human rights, and
were accused of op-
posing the regime. The
aim was to mould
these people into the
shape the communist
regime wanted. To that
end, prisoners are
forced to work 10-16
hours a day in the
most terrible condi-
tions, and were humili-
ated and tortured.
