Another molecule capable of walking on the microtubules
is the motor protein dynein. One of the largest proteins known,
they walk to the (-) end of the microtubules which is in opposite
direction to kinesins. In other words, kinesin, myosin V and
dynein molecules that are in charge of transporting intracellu-
lar organelles and materials, take steps with their legs just like a
human gait and carry their cargo from the cell membrane to-
wards the center. Using a very precise camera that can take
1000 pictures a second, scientists discovered the following: Al-
though kinesin and dynesins carry their cargo in opposite di-
rections, they do not block each other’s movement and, on the
contrary, they cooperate. This is because the cargo is handed
over between the kinesin and dynein motor proteins in certain
intervals. No one yet knows how this cooperation occurs, and
how these molecules, which are seemingly the opposite of each
other, are informed of the location of each other, and contact.
