            the reasons as follows: “If polymeric chains of proteins and nu-
            cleic acids are to be forged out of their precursor monomers, a
            molecule of water must be removed at each link in the chain.
                  It is therefore hard to see how polymerization could have
            proceeded in the aqueous environment of the primitive ocean,
            since the presence of water favors depolymerization rather than
            polymerization. The chemist Richard E. Dickinson explains

            why:
