There is an indication that Afghanistan will be occupied during
the Last Days. The Russian invasion of Afghanistan took place in 1979
(1400, according to the Islamic calendar).
… at that place are treasures of God, but these are not of gold
and silver …
In addition, this hadith draws attention to Afghanistan's material
riches. Today, large oil deposits, iron basins, and coal mines that have
not been commercially exploited yet have been detected there.

A Der Spiegel story about the Soviet invasion states that the Soviet Union is willing
to pursue economic interests in the region, even if it ends the invasion. At that time,
Afghanistan's natural gas reserves were estimated to be 150 billion cubic metres – a
great incentive, as do its rich coal, lead, zinc, silver, gold mines, and the world's
richest lapis mines.
