the powerful racist basis of British imperialism:

The deep representatives of the British civilization, which came to be

known as the 'Empire on which the sun never sets' after the industrial revo-
lution, had dreamed of ruling the world since the foundation of their empire.

Another quote by Rhodes only verifies this assertion:

It is our duty to seize every opportunity of acquiring more territory and we
should keep this one idea steadily before our eyes: that more territory simply

means more of the Anglo-Saxon race, more of the best, the most human, most
honorable race the world possesses. 2
