n after the birth of Betsy, the family moved to West Hay,
Kings Cliffe and stayed in the village for the next 23 years until
1894, when their mother Maria died.
In 1881, the family had moved to Maltings Terrace, three more
children had been born and their surname was now Rhoades.
By 1891 they had moved to West Street, another three children
had been born, including our subject John H. “Rhoades” in 1885.
When the mother Maria died in 1894, it is likely that the family
split up.
In 1901 we find John senior living in a pub in his home village
of Ludford and John H. working as an agricultural labourer in
Kirkby cum Osgodby in North Lincolnshire.
By 1911, John Senior had remarried and had also moved to
Kirkby cum Osgodby. However, by this time John H was living in
Grantham where he lived as a boarder at 16 Manthorpe Road.
He was 26 years old and still working as a labourer.
Just three weeks after war was declared on 4th August 1914
John H presented himself at the recruiting office in Scunthorpe
and joined the 6th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment.
The 6th was a new battalion created when war was declared
and was part of the 11th (Northern) Division. After initial training
at the depot, the infantry was assembled at Grantham. Lord
Kitchener inspected them at Belton Park in October 1914, when
they were still desperately short of uniforms and equipment.
The kit situation was somewhat better when King George V
inspected them at the end of May 1915.
On 30th June 1915 they embarked from Liverpool for Gallipoli
on the Aquitania and Empress of Britain. They landed near Lala
Baba at Suvla Bay on the 6th and 7th of August.
There was no rest after the sea voyage as some of the fiercest
fighting took place in early August. Two hills, named by the
troops Green Hill and Chocolate Hill (due to their colour), were
captured on August 7th by the 6th Lincolnshire’s after very fierce
fighting. On the following two days attempts were made to push
along the ridge formed by the hills, but the allies were repulsed
by the Turks.
