was during this latter action that John Rhodes was injured in the
thigh on the 9th of August. He had been on land for just four days.
He was taken to the coast and sent by ship to hospital in Malta.
He was reported as ‘wounded and dangerously ill’ and he died
in Malta on 18th September 1915.
John H is buried at the Pieta Mil cemetery Grave number
X11.2. The cemetery is located on Triq id-Duluri road about two
kilometres south west of Valetta on the road to Sliema.
A telegram was sent to his father at Osgodby with one word in
each space and read:-

Lincs I regret to report that 11033 Private John Rhodes of
6 LIncs Regt died of wounds 18 Septr. From - records

ROBERTS Albert Edward
Probably Sergeant 52787 Durham Light Infantry
Sergeant 111342 Labour Corps
Born in 1887 in Kings Cliffe, Albert was the son of James and
Emma Roberts of Bridge Street, Kings Cliffe.
By 1911 he had moved to Greenford near Harrow, working as a
domestic gardener.
He joined the army, probably after the conscription in January 1916.
In 1918 he was promoted to Sergeant for bravery.
The Stamford & Rutland News of 18th September 1918 reports:-

“Kings Cliffe – Promoted for Bravery – Corporal A E Roberts, Labour
Company, Durham, has been promoted sergeant for bravery in the
field, in rescuing a wounded comrade while he was wounded in the
thigh himself.”

He survived the war and married Emily Peadon in Croydon in
1928.

ROBERTS Charles Henry
Private 5409 5th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment
Private 523100 409th Agricultural Company Labour Corps
Born in 1893 in Kings Cliffe, Charles was the eldest son of
Charles and Mary Roberts of West Street, Kings Cliffe.
