was invalided out of the army and for the next 10 years had
nine operations to try to repair the damage.
In 1926 he married Annie Elizabeth Cole, but the marriage only
lasted a year as Thomas died on 7th November 1927 at the
Infirmary Peterborough. He was just 35 years old.
The Stamford & Rutland News for the 16th January 1918
reports:-

“Kings Cliffe – Wounded – Private Thomas Henry Roberts, son of Mrs
Daniel Roberts of the Wheel Inn, Kings Cliffe, was admitted to the
No.1 General Hospital, France, on January 3rd. He was suffering
from shell wounds in the left thigh, and the Matron reported to Mrs.
Roberts that he was seriously ill.”

ROBERTS W
The letter to the Stamford & Rutland News of 16th September
1914 includes in the list of Kings Cliffe men in the army – W
Roberts.
Equally the letter from H E Dixon (Senior) lists W Roberts as
being in the Regular Army. This is certainly not the William
Roberts (below) as he did not join the army until well after these
reports were written. It could refer to William Roberts, the son
of Francis Roberts who lived on Park Street and was born
1889. Equally it could be William Roberts, the son of Henry and
Caroline Roberts of West Street, who was born in 1889.
There are too many William Roberts in the military records to
have any confidence in selecting the right man.

ROBERTS William

old.
