1871 nine-, year old Frederic is still living with his parent and
siblings in Kings Cliffe.
In 1881 and now 19 he is still living with his parents (but his
name has gained a “k” – Frederick).
He cannot be found in 1891, possibly because he is away in
India with the army, but a year later in about November 1892 he
marries Julia Saunders. The marriage is registered in Oundle.
By 1901 they are living at 11, St. George’s Street, Stamford.
They have seven children living with them, all with the surname
“Green”.
Julia’s original two children, Robert and Arthur (aged 13 and 10
respectively) are there.
Also there is Florence, aged 8, (born in Kings Cliffe) at about
the time that Frederick and Julia married. Also another daughter
born in Kings Cliffe – Betsy, aged seven, is there.
The last three children, James, 5, Eveline, 4, and Frederick, 1,
are all born in Stamford.
We can presume that Frederick, Julia and family probably lived
in Kings Cliffe from the marriage until about 1894 when they
moved to Stamford.
So we have now established how Arthur Saunders became
Arthur William Saunders Green and, although living in Stamford
when he went to war, he was clearly a Kings Cliffe man!
At the 1911 census Arthur was still living with his mother
and step-father in Stamford but at the end of that year, 23rd
December 1911, he married Maud Ethel Clipston at Stamford.
They had two children, Florence Bessie Green (later Dunkely)
and Ronald.
Arthur joined the Lincolnshire Regiment almost as soon as war
was declared and, by 1st March 1915, was on his way to France.
The only Lincolnshire Battalion in France at that time was the
2nd Battalion so it can be assumed that he was sent to reinforce
them.
The 2nd Battalion were in the 25th Brigade of the 8th Division
and they were scheduled to take part in the first major attack by
