EN Arthur William Saunders
Private 2478 Lincolnshire Regiment
Sgt 200476 Lincolnshire Regiment
Sgt 4792156 Lincolnshire Regiment
Corporal 18316 Leicestershire Regiment – WW2
Arthur was born in 1890 in Kings Cliffe to Julia Lightfoot Green.
Arthur’s lineage is sufficiently complex that it is worth a chapter
in its own right, so we shall start with his mother’s family.
Elizabeth Saunders (sometimes Sanders) was born in Apethorpe
in 1835.
In 1851, as a 15 year old, she was working in the pub in
Apethorpe, The Queen’s Head Inn.
In 1855 she gives birth to a boy, Charles Saunders. Two years
later, she marries John Elijah Lightfoot in Oundle.
In February 1858 John Lightfoot dies leaving Elizabeth a widow
at the age of 23.
In April 1861, Elizabeth Lightfoot is a servant in the house of
Susan Woodin, a dressmaker, in Apethorpe. Her son, Charles
is not with her as he is living with her parents, John and Mary
Saunders who are also in Apethorpe.
In early 1864 Elizabeth gave birth to Caroline Lightfoot, and four
years later has another daughter, Julia.
At the census in 1871 the whole family – widow Elizabeth
Lightfoot, Charles Saunders, Caroline Lightfoot, and Julia
Lightfoot are living at Workhouse Lane, Kings Cliffe.
By the 1881 census Elizabeth has married Joseph Langly and
is living with him in Woodnewton. She is now Betsy Langly
(possibly Langley), and her daughter Julia Lightfoot is living with
them, together with two other Langly children.
By 1891 they are all back at Workhouse Lane, Kings Cliffe,
including Julia Saunders (she has reverted to her mother’s
maiden name) and Julia’s two children – Robert, aged 3, and
Arthur just five months old i.e. born about November 1890.
Meanwhile in Kings Cliffe, Frederic Green is born to John and
Mary Green, in 1862.
