EN Frederick
Possibly Corporal 441 Army Service Corps
Driver S4/248182 Army Service Corps
Military Foot Police P/18347
Frederick was born in 1862 in Kings Cliffe, and was the son of
John and Mary Green of Kings Cliffe.
He was also the father of Arthur Green. (See that story for his early life).
Family history says that he was in the Army in India, and, as he
cannot be located in the UK census of 1881, we can conclude
that this was probably the time when he was abroad.
By 1883, he was out of the army and back in England where
he married Arthur’s mother, Julia. His story until the war is
recounted in the Arthur Green story.
When war came in 1914 the army expanded at a very great rate
and one of the areas where they found themselves severely
overstretched was in the military police. To resolve this, time-
served men, of at least corporal status were called up or
volunteered to fill the gap.
If we have identified the correct Frederick Green, then he was
one of these men.
He went to France on 2nd October 1914, and survived the war.
He died in Stamford in 1926.
GREEN G
Possibly Private 21470 Bedfordshire Regiment
Private 622668 Labour Corps
Possibly George Thomas Green, born 1896 in Kings Cliffe,
to Thomas Green and his first wife Caroline, of Bridge Street,
Kings Cliffe.
He is listed in Stamford & Rutland News of 16th Sept 1914 of
Kings Cliffe men in the Army. He is also mentioned in the letter
to the newspaper by HE Dixon (Senior).
GREEN Harry
Private 17759 5th Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment
Harry was born in 1895 in Kings Cliffe, possibly to one Rose Green.
