Emily Price Enjoys a Variety of Activities
Fourteen year old Emily Price enjoys gymnastics and has loved to dance since she was about 4 years old. She also plays volleyball and clarinet in band at her school. She loves to hike and look for Elk sheds in the Black Hills. She also loves driving her family’s Suzuki Samurai 4x4 on the trails. “I have been around hot rods and custom cars all of my life. I love to go for rides with my dad and my family in hot rods and car shows.” she said.
When she was a little girl she would play with dolls, but spent a lot of time in the shop with her dad. Her favorite shows are on the Disney channel. Her fa- vorite holiday is Christmas because she gets more race kart parts.
Most people have no idea that she races karts. “My teachers really think its cool. My classmates think it is very interesting. I am in 8th grade at West Middle School. I would like to be a teacher or a veterinarian. I love animals and
have 2 dogs and 2 cats. I want to be able to help animals when I
grow up.” she said.
She would love to be able to race mini sprints in the fu-
ture. Her favorite drivers are Kyle Larson, who she was able to watch race sprint cars at Knoxville Iowa; and her other favorite is Shana Texter, a motorcycle flat track racer. “I love watching her when she comes to the Speedway for the Sturgis Rally races.”
Emily started racing at age 12. Her dad bought her a used kart that had been setting in a shed for a while. “We took the kart all apart and rebuilt it. We powder-coated the chassis purple, one of my favorite colors. My dad helps me learn and I also do most of the work myself. I am a 3rd generation driver. My grandfather raced and my Dad also raced. I have been around racing my entire life.” she told us.
Her favorite racing moment is when she passed the leader in the final turn on the last lap and won her first race. She also got 2nd place in a indoor race. Her marketing partners are Black Hills Kart Racing, The Fence Connection, Public Safety Equipment, Solid Construction and Van Pelt Construction. Her whole family
really supports her racing. Her Dad and Grandpa inspired her to race and help her prepare the kart. She races at Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City SD, Jack- pine Gypsies short track in Sturgis SD, and Gillette Wyoming. Her race kart is a Phantom Nemesis chassis with a TRJ karting clone motor for the junior 3 class.
One of her memories from last year is not a good one. She was involved in a bad wreck when two karts spun in front of her, she had no where to go, and hit a kart full speed. “I hit my chest on the steering wheel and really bruised my chest and ribs. I really struggled the rest of the year to get my confidence back. The last race of the year in Sturgis I finished in 2nd and it really felt good to be back up to speed!”
There is only one other girl that races against Emily. They are hoping to get more girls involved this year.
Her goal is to be able to race Mini Sprints in the near future. She is going to continue to learn and get bet- ter in the karts. Her favorite part of racing is working on the kart with her grandpa and dad. “Driving is very fun. I like talking to the other teams and
