1: The Quick Way via Honiton

        Navigation notes

Routes 1 and 3 on the map

From Exeter find your way to the A30.

From the city centre you might take Magadalen Rd (pron. Mordlin) to the B3183 and Honiton Rd.

0.0 mi 50.7287, -3.4643 Get on to the A30 following signs to “Honiton A30”

12.6 mi 50.7935, -3.2110 To visit Honiton take the left lane exit s/posted “Honiton A375”.

        0.5 mi At the T i/s turn l. s/p “Town Centre”.

Otherwise, to continue towards Dorchester . . .

        1.7 mi 50.8042, -3.1800 Exit left at the r/bout on to the A35 s/p “Dorchester / A35”. Then follow
the Dorchester signs through the outskirts of Honiton.

31.8 mi 50.7124,-2.5526 A little under half a mile before Winterbourne Abbas you’ll enter a small
wood. Look for a castle-like house set back among the trees on the right. Just past that, again
on the right, you’ll see the Nine Stones of Winterbourne Abbas. It’s a small prehistoric stone
circle. Made of sarsen stone, like the stones of Stonehenge, it is about 8m in diameter. Learn

        0.4 mi 50.7132, -2.5432 Winterbourne Abbas. Pop. 355.

The Thomas Hardy Memorial: Just opposite the BP Petrol Station, turn r. on to the B3159.
About 100 yards later bear r. at the Y intersection on to Coombe Rd. You’ll now rise and fall over
classic Dorset farmland and 2.3 mi along Coombe Rd turn l. to the Hardy Monument. Surprisingly,
in Dorset, the home and inspiration for author Thomas Hardy, this monument is not to him. It is,
rather to Thomas Hardy, Lord Nelson’s captain aboard HMS Victory, his flagship in the Battle of
Trafalgar, made famous by Nelson’s dying words, “Kiss me, Hardy . . . “. If nothing else, you get a
fine view of the Dorset countryside.

In Winterbourne Abbas the Coach and Horses Inn is well regarded for accommodation and meals.
Been serving travellers since at least 1814.

From Winterbourne Abbas you can take the B3159, Coombe Rd and Bishops Hill, about 6 miles
        out to Abbotsbury.
