Otherwise, continuing north . . .

9.2 mi 54.9094, -1.5771 Just ahead of you is the Angel Of The
North. Given that it’s not a good idea to stop on the A1, you can
take an exit s/p “Gateshead (South) / A167”. Then follow the
signs to the Angel Of The North.

Since spreading its wings in February 1998, Antony Gormley’s
The Angel of the North has become one of the most talked about
pieces of public art ever produced. Rising 20 metres from the
earth near the A1 in Gateshead, the Angel dominates the skyline, dwarfing all those who come to
see it. Made from 200 tonnes of steel, it has a wingspan of 54 metres.

Remain on the A1(M) or A1 following signs to Newcastle and/or Gateshead. You will skirt around
        the western side of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.

        39.5 mi 55.3980, -1.6954 Leave the A1 s/p “Alnwick / Alnmouth / A1068”.

        Go str through the r/bout.

Follow the B6346 into Alnwick town centre. Alnwick Castle is on the right if you keep following the
B6346 on to Bondgate Without and Narrowgate.

For the castle, at the Y i/s in the middle of the town, take the r/hand fork.

To visit Cragside, take the B6341 12.5 miles from Alnwick to Rothbury.

        ALNWICK TO EDINBURGH

The first part of this trip will take you to Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island. You will then cut across
country to Flodden Field, near the township of Coldstream, where one of the most dreadful battles
in English/Scottish history was fought. You’ll make a diversion to some of the best examples of
great houses and shattered abbeys, before taking the A68 to Edinburgh.

        Leaving Alnwick.

Go back to the A1 the way you came in.

        1.3 mi 55.3991, -1.6935 turn l and merge on to the A1 s/p “Berwick / Edinburgh”.

        21.9 mi 55.6720, -1.9171 Turn r s/p “Holy Island / Beal”.

Expert navigator checkpoint: On the r. at that i/s is the Lindisfarne Inn.

The Barn and Beast cafe on the left is not a bad watering hole if it’s around that time.

Continue to Holy Island and Lindisfarne Castle.

When you are ready, return to the A1 intersection.

0.0 mi 55.6720, -1.9171 At the i/s with the A1. Cross straight over the A1 and take the road s/p
        “Kentstone 1” ,.
