Durham to Edinburgh via Hadrian’s Wall
Return to the Lakeland and The North Menu
For around three centuries, Hadrian’s Wall was a vibrant, multi-cultural frontier sprawling
almost 80 miles coast-to-coast.
Built by a force of 15,000 men in under six years, it’s as astounding today for its sheer vision as it
is for its engineering. Milecastles, barracks, ramparts and forts provide a dramatic backdrop to a
diverse landscape.
Click here for more information on Hadrian’s Wall.
The first stage of the journey will take you via the A1 to Chester-le-Street, then the A69 to
Vindolanda, Birdoswald and Housesteads Roman Fort.
After that you have a couple of options for the run to Edinburgh:
1: The direct way: Via the A68 through Jedburgh, St Boswells and Melrose. This route will take
you over Carter Bar in the Cheviot Hills, the most beautiful scenic border crossing to enter
Scotland.
