Otherwise, continuing north . . .

Side trip to the Washington Old Hall . . .

1.0 mi 54.8819, -1.5599 If you wish to take the side trip to Washington Old Hall at Junction 64
        exit the A1 s/p “Washington / Birtley / A195”.

Go to page 303 for navigation notes on this option.

         Otherwise, continuing north . . .

9.2 mi 54.9094, -1.5771 Just ahead of you is the Angel Of The
North. Given that it’s not a good idea to stop on the A1, you can
take an exit s/p “Gateshead (South) / A167”. Then follow the
signs to the Angel Of The North.

Since spreading its wings in February 1998, Antony Gormley’s
The Angel of the North has become one of the most talked
about pieces of public art ever produced. Rising 20 metres from
the earth near the A1 in Gateshead, the Angel dominates the
skyline, dwarfing all those who come to see it. Made from 200 tonnes of steel, it has a wingspan of
        54 metres.

Remain on the A1(M) or A1 following signs to Newcastle and/or Gateshead. You will skirt around
        the western side of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne

7.9 mi 54.9816, -1.6965 At Junction 75 on the A1, take the A69 exit ramp s/p “Hexham City (West)
        / A69” and “Hadrian’s Wall”.

        28.9 mi 54.9766, -2.3540 Turn r. s/posted “Once Brewed 2 1/2 / Westwood 1/4 / Hadrians Wall 2
        1/2 / Vindolanda 2”.

1.7 mi 54.9910, -2.3538 Turn r. for Vindolanda. Be careful – it’s a one lane road with passing
        spaces.

        Continuing on from the Vindolanda turn-off . . .

1.5 mi 54.9795, -2.5352 At the i/s with the B6318. The Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre.

        Where to from here?

You now have a choice of either (or both) of two Hadrian’s Wall sites. By turning right you can go
directly north and along the way take a walk up to Houseteads Fort. But be advised it’s a solid 20
        minute climb from the car-park.

On the other hand, by turning left and going 12 miles out of your way to Birdoswald Roman
Fort, you can get a much better wall experience without the long hard slog uphill. That is my
recommendation. It’s one of the best parts of the Hadrian’s Wall experience.

        1: For Birdoswald:

At the i/s with the B6318 turn l. on to the B6318 s/p “Cawfields 21/4 / Roman Army Museum 5”
        and “Carlisle / Greenhead / B6318”.
