5.4 mi 54.9820, -2.5341 Turn r. for the Roman Army Museum
                                      (pictured).

                                      0.7 mi 54.9820, -2.5341 In Greenhead, turn r. on to the A6318
                                      s/posted “Gilsland 2”.

Expert navigator checkpoint: Just before that turn look for the
                                      Greenhead Hotel on your left.

At this point, if you are in a real hurry, you can turn left and take the A69 directly towards Carlisle –
but I seriously recommend you take the road to Birdoswald Roman Fort. It’s one of the best parts
of the Hadrian’s Wall experience. If you elect to go direct (why??), pick up the trail again at the
        Brampton Roundabout.

        For Birdoswald from Greenhead . . .

        5.2 mi 54.9964, -2.6028 Turn left s/posted “Lanercost 5 / Priory 5 / Brampton 7”. On the opposite
side of the road is a sign “Birdoswald 1 1/2”.

0.9 mi 54.9900, -2.6042 Birdoswald Roman Fort is the place to see the longest surviving stretch of
Hadrian’s Wall and extensive remains of a Roman Fort.

There’s a walking track that follows the wall in either direction.

2.7 mi Photo Opportunity: The road runs alongside a section of Hadrian’s Wall. There are great
views to the south from here.

To continue north towards Edinburgh, return to the turn-off from Vindolanda, at the site of The Sill.

        2: The direct route north

        0.7mi 54.9965, -2.2387 Coming from Vindolanda, at T i/s turn r. on to the B6318 s/p “Newcastle
        32 B6318 / Housesteads 1 / Chollerford 9”.

        0.9 mi 55.0098 / -2.3229 Turn l. into the Housesteads carpark.

Be aware that it’s a solid 20 minute climb from the entry point at Housesteads to the ruins.

To continue from the Housesteads carpark, turn l. on to the B6318.

5.1 mi 55.0358, -2.2203 Temple of Mithras. This temple to the god Mithras stands near
Carrawburgh Roman Fort on Hadrian’s Wall. The site is reached through a field.

Now you must choose your route north:

1: The direct way: Via the A68 through Jedburgh, St Boswells and Melrose

        or

2: Back out to the coast to Alnwick to explore Alnwick Castle, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne,
Flodden Field, near Coldstream, before joining the A68 and A7 through St Boswells and Melrose.

See the bottom of the next page for this option . . .
