Things to do in Dover
Dover Castle (pictured). Discover 2000 years of history at Dover Castle. Step
inside the Great Tower and immerse yourself in the medieval world and royal
court of King Henry ll. Travel deep inside the White Cliffs and tour the
Underground Hospital. The keep was built by Henry in 1180 with later parts
added by King John, Henry III and the Tudors.
Roman Painted House. The Roman Painted House was discovered by Kent
Archaeological Rescue Unit in the 1970s. Built about AD 200 it formed part of a large mansio or
official hotel, for travellers crossing the English Channel. It is the finest surviving Roman Period
House with unique painted walls (frescoes) and elaborate under-floor heating.
Boat trips: Coastal tours including a seaward view of the famous white cliffs of Dover.
Battle of Britain Memorial. The stone figure of a pilot in contemplative mood stands as a
permanent tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who served their country so unselfishly in
her hour of need.
Take a walk along the top of the White Cliffs of Dover. The Visitor Centre on Langdon Cliffs offers
information, refreshments, light lunches and a shop selling gifts and souvenirs.
Follow in the footsteps of pilgrims on the North Downs Way. You could do the whole 153 mile journey from
the White Cliffs of Dover to Farnham through a beautiful landscape rich in heritage. Or just take a short
stroll over part of it. Either way you are following an ancient road that has been used by traders, armies,
pilgrims and simple local yokels for around 5000 years.

shop, farming tools, cowshed. At Sandwich.
Deal Castle is one of the finest Tudor artillery castles in England. Today you can explore the whole

Chillenden Mill. A distinctive local landmark, standing on an exposed site, is a Grade ll listed
building. There have been windmills on this site since the 1300s. In 1868 an open-trestle post
windmill was built to replace an earlier post mill. It was not fitted with a fantail and would have
been turned manually. Located in fields north west of Chillenden village and 4 km south-west of
Sandwich.
Crabble Corn Mill Built in 1812 to supply flour to troops defending the Kent coast from possible
invasion from Napoleon’s forces. Now run entirely by volunteers after restoration in 1986. The mill
can be seen demonstrating how flour is made traditionally by water power using French burr
stones.
